Achievements and Honors:

• Developed a digital photographic method to quantify plume opacity, which was awarded a US patent. He actively participated the ASTM internal work group to develop a standard method using digital camera to quantify plume opacity. The standard method was published in 2009 and was endorsed by the USEPA as an alternative method to Method 9 in determining opacity compliance for industrial sources.

• Developed innovative LIDAR technologies to quantify dust emissions from the most fugitive, and therefore the most important and most difficult-to-quantify sources. Du’s research has provided the comprehensive remote sensing data to date, which were then analyzed by Dr. Du to determine the mass of dust emitted from various military operations that cover a wide range of conditions. Based on his contribution to finding solutions to environmental problems faced by the Army, Dr. Du received the Research, Development, or Operational Support Team Award from the U.S. Army.
• Dr. Du's research was awarded grants from the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, National Natural Science Foundation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Fujian Commission of Science and Technology. He received the Distinguished Young Scholar Career Awards from Xiamen City and Fujian Province in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
